This redesign was created for my studio class at UW Bothell.
Team Size: 5
Time Limit: Design sprint – 2 weeks
Expectation: Come up with a way to engage kids (6-10 years) with STEM through the game Monopoly
Contributions: Mood Board & Low Fidelity Prototype
I solely own all the ideas on this page
I pitched the idea of teaching kids about the heating of the ocean/ coral reefs. But as I talked more, I thought the idea was too narrow. So, the idea evolved to teaching about climate change.
This mood board was to give inspiration on how the board could look like. These are all artwork from children books.
For the pieces I made sure to think of easy recognizable artifacts from the world. As well as gender neutral so that no kid subconsciously learns/ internalizes gender roles.
Then instead of houses, it would be factories (small and big). So it would be like kids are creating their own companies.
The money would follow the standard monopoly money design, but with the earth in the center instead of a character.
The design is monochromatic so that the money could be printed on different colors of paper. The white part would be transparent, and only the grey and black parts would be printed out.
For this I changed the titles to natural and manmade since these are two big category of things that can affect the earth.
Inside these cards I wanted to incorporate interesting natural events that can occur on the earth that kids might not know about. As well as introduce kids to people who people who have been working on helping the earth through different means (science/ raising awareness).
These cards would be an introduction to learning more facts about the earth and its fighting heroes. I did not want to incorporate more information into the cards because I didn’t want the facts to take away from the game. So to accompany the game there would be a handbook inside that goes into more details about the different types of events and people you have seen inside of the game.
But I understand things get lost, so in addition to the additional book, a website and QR scanner would be printed on the inside of the box. These would lead to a website that contains all of the information from the included pamphlet and more!
The game play for this section would remain the same since it is already quite complicated for children. And the landmarks would be national parks/ landmarks (such as: Yosemite National Park, the Statue of Liberty or the Grand Canyon).
And the national landmarks would be the EPA and Congress because they are the ones who have control over environmental regulations. Kids can learn more about both in the extra pamphlet. (The pamphlet is descried more under “Chance Cards” underneath the picture.)
Free Space would turn into Earth Day.
These are my ideas for the redesign. I drew out as much as I could. The things I could not draw I placed a picture in the tile instead.
If I’m incapable of drawing some of the designs I should put a placement image in all of the squares for consistency.
With a redesign it’s better to start off with broader ideas so that you have more areas to pull from so that you don’t get stuck.
